Abstract

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are increasing in developing Middle Eastern (ME) countries. It has been anticipated that from 1990 to 2020 the mortality rate from ischemic heart disease in the Middle East will increase by 146% in females and 174% in males [1]. The INTERHEART Middle East study of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients in Egypt, Kuwait, UAE, Iran, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain and Israel revealed that these countries had the largest number of AMI cases below the age of 40 and youngest average age (52 years) for the occurrence of the first AMI in comparison to North American and European populations [2].
