Abu Dhabi Rehabilitation Centre is the only centre that provides specialised care for the elderly in Abu Dhabi City.

Now part of Zayed Higher Organization for Humanitarian Care and Special Needs (ZHO), Abu Dhabi Rehabilitation Centre was founded in 1993 pursuant to the directives of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and under the auspices of his wife HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak. The centre was known as Abu Dhabi Elderly Care Centre until 2006 when HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, issued Law No. (15) of 2006 to change its name to Abu Dhabi Rehabilitation Centre.

The Centre is equipped with the latest technology and equipments and admits elderly people who need comprehensive and continuous medical care for long periods, which cannot be made available at homes.

In addition to older persons, the Centre also receives disabled children with severe disabilities who need nursing care.

Conditions for Admission

Elderly patients are admitted to the Centre under specific conditions, such as being UAE nationals at the age of 60 years or above with nobody to take care of them. The patient should be in need of specialised medical care that cannot be provided at home and free from all types of infectious diseases. In addition, the centre is not an alternative for the family care, and it does not receive cases where there is a clear negligence on the part of the family to perform its duty.

Services of Abu Dhabi Rehabilitation Centre

Abu Dhabi Rehabilitation Centre offers a number of health care and social services including diagnosis, consultation, physical therapy, speech therapy, psychotherapy, exercise therapy, water cure, work therapy, family counselling and integration into the society.

Health Care Services Health care services comprise medical treatment for residents and visitors of the outpatient clinics, as well as home care services which include complete medical treatment, physiotherapy and speech therapy. The Centre collaborates with the hospitals affiliated to Health Authority – Abu Dhabi (HAAD), including Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, to provide treatment, psychotherapy and medicines to the patients.

Social care The centre provides a wide range of social care services for its inmates such as regular communication with families, organising trips and Hajj and Umrah tours, participating in public and national events and festivals and conducting lectures.

Through its Social Service Department, the Centre also guides families on how to deal with the elderly and issues associated with ageing and urge them to strengthen relationships with old people. It encourages families to visit patients and vice versa to prevent the feeling of depression, loneliness and lack of acceptance on each side. Every year, it marks the International Day of Older Persons and honours senior citizens who have rendered great services to the country and families who are faithful to their elderly relatives.
