This past weekend I had the blessed opportunity to represent the nation of Egypt at the United Nations Special Summit on Aging at McGill University’s Model United Nations Conference. Model United Nations is a simulation of the actual United Nations and its organ bodies in which colleges across the country compete in. The college debaters, known as delegates, are placed into a hypothetical debate representing either a nation or a minister discussing topics from war, historical event, business, sciences, and more. In my case, I represented the nation of Egypt and their views on the lifestyle and maintenance of the elderly at the UN Special Summit on Aging. Prior to the start of the debate, all college debaters attended a Leadership Forum that featured a panel of an author, a MIT professor, a previous Montreal mayoral candidate, and an astronaut. The Leadership Forum panelists discussed many ideas including the future of the baby-boomer populations. This tied into my debate at the United Nations Special Summit on Aging during the course of the weekend. The panelists, collectively, stated that in eastern Asia there is currently 10 workers for every retiree; by the time 2050 rolls around, there will be 3 workers for every retiree. This statistic astonished me as the world’s fasting growing and largest exporter of goods, China, will face severe strain on the nation’s finances in the future. The panelists also stated the rising costs of healthcare and the growing elderly population across the international stage.
