Purpose of the Study

The Regional Specialized Geriatric Services (RSGS) entity was formed to improve the organization, coordination and governance of specialized geriatric services for frail seniors in the Central East LHIN. In 2013, the RSGS Governance Authority commissioned Preyra Solutions Group (PSG) to:

 assess the current and future specialized geriatric service needs of the CE LHIN population

 assess the capacity of specialized geriatric services in the CE LHIN

 examine the gaps between needs and capacity for different sectors that provide specialized geriatric services

 suggest services, subpopulations, and activities that should be priorized for system improvement

 identify system reconfigurations and resource redistributions to achieve an integrated system of specialized geriatric services.

To conduct its assessment PSG worked with an RSGS Steering Committee, which included clinicians and managers from specialized programs in the CE LHIN. PSG conducted extensive analysis using population, administrative, and survey data. Methods included linked episodic, single episodic, and population based analysis. To understand demand, we estimated the risk of health decline. To understand service need, we matched different kinds of senior health risks to RSGS interventions that could reduce that risk. Where possible, statistics from other specialized programs and the literature were used for comparisons.
