Omeprazole - impairment of vision
Germany. The Drug Commission of the German Medical Profession has received 2 reports of visual impairment in pilots following oral administration of the proton pump inhibitor, omeprazole. The symptoms subsided in both patients following withdrawal of omeprazole and administration of vitamin B complex.
The Commission’s Adverse Drug Reactions Committee points out that visual impairment, including blindness, are known to be associated with intravenous administration of high doses of omeprazole (now suspended in Germany). However, the occurrence of visual impairment during oral treatment with the standard dose would appear to be unusual and of particular significance. Although a causal relationship was not confirmed definitively in these two patients, the lack of other medication and the disappearance of the symptoms following withdrawal of omeprazole would appear to support such a relationship.
